Exercise Rehab with an Experienced Physiotherapist

Are you tired of pain limiting your ability to exercise? The right programme won’t aggravate your pain, it will actually relieve it.

Our individual customised programmes are designed to address pain, movement difficulties and medical problems such as back pain, neck pain, headaches, shoulder or arm pain, hip pain, knee pain, foot pain or arthritis.

Many of our clients have previously engaged in exercises that actually made their pain worse. The problem is that many people with pain have posture or movement habits that actually contribute to wear and tear on the body. When you do strengthening exercises without good alignment you strengthen a faulty habit instead of a healthy one.

It may take a lot of focus and concentration for you to change the way you sense and move your body. However there are lasting benefits of learning to move more comfortably and efficiently. You will learn that pushing through pain is rarely helpful. Truly therapeutic exercise feels good, helps you learn about your body and leaves you feeling great at the end of the session.

Our Exercise Studio

Our private exercise studio is fully equipped with large equipment such as a Pilates Reformer, Trapeze Table, a Vibration Plate and a Wunda Chair. We also have a large selection of small exercise equipment including weights, mini-balls, foam rollers, balance boards and bolsters. The beautiful old house we work from was built in 1903. You’ll love the warm, friendly and relaxed environment, a place where you can exercise in comfort and safety.

Initial Assessment

Your initial assessment is extremely important. The more we know about your problems the better equipped we are to solve them. This is why we take the time to gather your health information in a long initial consultation (40 minutes). If you have a complex problem or a long medical history, it may take 2 or very occasionally even 3 appointments before we have the full clinical picture. Over many years of experience we have found that the time we put in at the beginning pays off with long term, lasting benefits for our clients.

We aim to get you started with at least one home exercise at the very first session.

  • Baseline questionnaires measure you current pain levels as well as your ability to perform regular tasks
  • Posture, strength and flexibility are checked to determine which areas you need to focus on
  • If you have chronic pain we help you identify lifestyle changes which may help break the pain cycle
  • We take the time to answer your questions and explain things clearly – knowlege is power
  • Together we set specific goals focusing on what’s important to you
  • A Treatment Plan is used to track your progress and make sure the programme is actually working
  • May be claimable under item code 500 (private health insurance)

Customised Therapeutic Exercise Programme

Your exercise programme will initially be carried out with one to one supervision from your Physiotherapist. We need to assess how you respond to the exercises, ensuring that it’s safe before you progress to attending a small group. At follow up consultations we provide any required physiotherapy treatment to minimize your pain. We also start to help you build a repertoire of therapeutic exercises. We show you how to set up the equipment and use it safety.

We understand that some people find it hard to remember the exercises and that’s why we write them on your programme. This includes a space for reminders about your technique that are specific to you. Sometimes we record short videos on your own mobile phone to help you remember your home exercises. These may include the use of small equipment such as resistance bands, a fitball or small weights.

Attendance at individual appointments may be claimable under item code 505, or for long appointments involving at least 2 problem areas item code 506.

Small Group Consultations

Once you are able to perform a basic repertoire of exercises safely, you can book into an Exercise Rehab small group. This usually runs at the same time every week for 5 week blocks. There are over 10 available times every wee. Due to the small numbers (4 or less in each group) booking through our administration staff is essential.

During these sessions your Physio will remind you about how to do your exercises and check to ensure you are using good alignment and correct technique. At first it may take a great deal of concentration to move your body in ways that are different from your usual habits. Some habits may have been present for many years. It takes patience to learn the new patterns, however you will reap the benefits in the long term. Each week this will become easier and what you learn will be of benefit for the rest of your life.

These group consultations may be claimable through private health insurance under item code 560.
